In 2010, Scott Rainey, MD, arrived at Tri Rivers. The orthopedic back and neck surgeon was brand new to the Pittsburgh area, but that didn’t faze him. He embraced the challenge.
“I grew up in Missouri and Texas, then I moved to Youngstown, Ohio, for my residency training,” Dr. Rainey said. “I was there for five years, and it’s also where I met my wife. I wanted to be close to her family, so that’s why we settled on Pittsburgh and Tri Rivers. It’s not tremendously different from back in the Midwest, which made it a pretty smooth transition.”
Back in his college days, Dr. Rainey played on the basketball team. He spent considerable time interacting with trainers, team doctors and orthopedic surgeons. Although he had some prior background with physical therapy, Dr. Rainey’s focus eventually shifted toward the surgical perspective.
“In my first orthopedic rotation, the director was a spine surgeon,” Dr. Rainey said. “I worked with him for the majority of the monthlong rotation, which set me down a path toward spine surgery. The more I learned about it, the more I liked it. Other specialties were fine, too, but spine always seemed to be the one that held my attention.”
Upon arriving at Tri Rivers, Dr. Rainey knew he needed to hit the ground running. At the same time, the entire Tri Rivers family made him feel comfortable and inspired him to be the best physician he could be.
“When I started, I didn’t know much about building a practice,” Dr. Rainey said. “Everything I’ve learned has come from my experiences with other people in the practice. Not just the surgeons, but everybody – nurses, mid-levels, front desk, phone team – has played a large role in any success I’ve had.”
Ten years later, Dr. Rainey is proud to say he’s built a successful and busy practice from the ground up. He enjoys getting the opportunity to make a difference by improving patient outcomes.
“I chose this profession because I wanted to help people. That’s why I went into medicine,” Dr. Rainey said. “To be able to do it in a welcoming practice that makes it easy to come to work every day is very rewarding. It’s a successful, high-character environment here at Tri Rivers, and I love being a part of it.”
