What's involved with a total knee replacement?
If your quality of life is suffering because of knee pain, it may be time to consider a knee replacement. However, most individuals aren't familiar with the decision-making process.
You should begin with an evaluation by an orthopedic surgeon. Depending on your level of pain and your physical limitations, you may be treated initially with conservative measures, such as exercising and physical therapy, weight loss, injection therapy and possibly using a brace or cane.
Next, it's important to discuss whether you are a good surgical candidate with your orthopedic surgeon. You will learn about the surgery, the expectations for your rehabilitation and recovery, discuss other treatment options, and review the benefits and risks of surgery.
After your primary care physician gives you preoperative clearance along with some routine blood work, an EKG and chest X-ray, you will undergo a history and physical prior to the surgery. It's important for you and your support members to fully understand and prepare for the surgery to help ensure the most favorable outcome in the long run.
