When should you see a doctor?
Most acute back pain resolves without treatment. However, you should seek treatment when:
- pain is persistent and rest or over-the-counter medications do not relieve pain
- pain interferes with daily activities
- pain interferes with sleep
- there is numbness, tingling or weakness in the legs
Making a diagnosis

To determine the cause of your back pain, your surgeon will ask about your symptoms and conduct a physical examination. Depending on the nature of your pain, you may undergo X-rays or other diagnostic tests, such as a CT scan (computed tomography), an MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) or an EMG (electromyogram).
After your doctor determines the source of your back pain, he or she will develop a treatment plan designed to help reduce pain and improve mobility. There is a wide range of treatment options for back and neck pain, ranging from conservative meansures to surgical intervention.
