  • Understanding the specialty of PMR

    Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation became recognized as a medical specialty in 1947 and grew considerably following World War II. With the large number of injured soldiers returning from war, PM&R physicians were given the task of restoring them to productive lives through pain management and rehabilitation.

  • When should you see a doctor?

    Patients who see a PM&R physician want to improve their symptoms through nonsurgical treatments. PM&R specialists treat a variety of problems ranging from neck and back pain to bursitis, pinched nerves, carpal tunnel syndrome and arthritis. They treat injuries and conditions that affect function. They also manage chronic pain associated with injury or illness.


    When pain becomes more severe or persistent, it may be necessary to see your doctor. Seek medical attention when the pain:

    • occurs when you are not involved in an activity
    • cannot be relieved by rest or reduced by over-the-counter medications
    • interferes with your ability to perform daily activities, such as walking or climbing stairs
    • awakens you from sleep
